Today we went to visit the part of town across the river called Trastevere. It has a beautiful park that runs through the neighborhood. It is so quiet and peaceful, you almost forget you are in Rome, except for the beautiful views from the top of the hill. Oh and it's shady, which is a must on hot and humid days in Rome.
This statue is of Anita Garibaldi, the famous general's wife who helped defend the city of Rome alongside her husband. The statue portrays her leading a charge on horseback with a gun in one hand and her baby slung in the other!

This is the Fontana del Gianicolo, which was very nice to dip your hands in and cool off with.
We weren't quite sure what this was...a mausoleum of sorts?
This is the church Santa Maria in Trastevere and is famous for the very interesting crypt it houses downstairs.

These are old frescoes at the entrance of the church.
So this is the crypt known as the 'bone crypt'. Yes those are actually skulls, and there are lots more of them on shelves on the sides of the walls. Where they came from I don't know...Why this exists, I don't know...
candelabra made from bones, possibly vertebrae
